About Displaced Peoples in Jordan

Jordan is home to one of the largest populations of displaced people in the Middle East. Over the decades, the country has hosted refugees from various conflicts, including Palestinians, Syrians, and Iraqis. Jordan’s Palestinian refugee population, in particular, has deep historical roots: following the 1948 Nakba, when many Palestinians were forced to flee their homes, Jordan became a primary refuge. Later, during the 1967 war, additional waves of Palestinians arrived in Jordan, many of whom settled permanently, with the country granting citizenship to a significant number. Today, Palestinian refugees make up a substantial portion of Jordan’s population, living in both urban areas and refugee camps, alongside newer refugee groups from neighboring conflicts.

Jordan has consistently served as a center of humanitarian response, offering stability, education, and access to services for displaced communities. Despite challenges related to resources and infrastructure, the government, together with international organizations, continues to provide critical support to ensure refugees can access healthcare, education, and basic living necessities. The longstanding presence of displaced peoples in Jordan has also fostered rich cultural and social integration, creating communities that contribute to Jordan’s social fabric while maintaining strong connections to their heritage.

Support for Refugee Camps in Jordan

Jordan hosts numerous refugee camps, primarily for Palestinians and more recently for Syrians, which are administered in collaboration with UN agencies such as UNRWA and UNHCR. Palestinian refugee camps, such as Baqa’a, Zaatari, and Jerash, were initially established as temporary tent settlements.

Over time, these camps evolved into permanent communities, with residents living in concrete homes while continuing to face high population densities and limited space. Despite the improvements, infrastructure and essential services often remain strained, with schools, hospitals, and sanitation systems operating under pressure to meet the needs of residents.

Volunteers in Jordan have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting education, community development, and social programs within these camps. Through initiatives such as teaching, youth mentorship, and recreational activities, volunteers contribute to the well-being and development of displaced communities. By engaging directly with residents, volunteers gain insight into daily life in refugee camps and help empower communities while fostering cultural understanding and international solidarity.

Program Description

As a volunteer for the Summer Jordanian Refugees Program 2026, your main responsibility will be providing educational and cultural support to the refugee communities in Jordan. Study Jordanian Arabic School and its partners focus primarily on education, which remains a critical need for many refugee children and youth. Working within these communities and camps provides a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully while engaging with residents on a personal level.

Many refugee camps in Jordan are located outside major urban centers, limiting residents’ access to international visitors and opportunities to practice English or participate in cultural exchange. To address this, the program organizes educational workshops, community activities, and cultural programs to foster interaction between refugees and international volunteers, helping bridge gaps and create meaningful connections.

Program Components:

  • Volunteer with refugee children and youth in refugee camps
  • Develop and lead educational workshops and activities in local refugee communities
  • Conduct musical, artistic, or theatrical projects
  • Assist local humanitarian and charity organizations
  • Support NGOs providing health and social services to refugees
  • Enroll in Arabic language courses to enhance communication and cultural immersion
  • Participate in School-led excursions to Jordanian cultural and historical sites
